The Gilded Cage, one of the most highly-regarded family businesses in the Falkirk area, is coming on to the market following an instruction to DM Hall Chartered Surveyors.
The traditional shop on the north side of Newmarket Street, which sells an attractive selection of gifts and jewellery, was opened by the mother of the present partner Steve Mackie 46 years ago and has built a loyal following.
Mr Mackie, who is putting the property up for sale because he is retiring, says that he has gathered an “unfailingly generous and remarkably pleasant” customer base over the years, some of whom began shopping with his mother and are still regulars.
The shop is close to the centre of Falkirk’s main shopping district, and has gained an enviable local reputation for its colourful and humorous seasonal window displays, including Hallowe’en and Valentine’s Day.
The Gilded Cage stocks a substantial range of gifts, including photo frames, glassware , kitchenware, ornaments novelties and Scottish gifts as well as brands such as Nomination, Pilgrim Terramundi Wild & Wolf and Spaceform.
Mr Mackie is delighted that even customers who have emigrated to other parts of the world still patronise his shop when they return to the area on family visits.
The shop is on the ground floor of a mid-terraced, three storey building which is constructed in traditional stonework, under a pitched and slated roof.
It is immaculately presented throughout, with a recessed glazed entrance door and two large display windows on either side. The internal walls are fully shop-fitted with various styles of spot-lit display shelving and glazed display units. There are also free standing display units.
There is a small stock area to the rear, a kitchen/staff room with office area, a separate outbuilding and, at first floor level, there is a further staff room, store and WC. There is a single car parking space to the rear of the shop.
Offers around £40,000 are sought for the goodwill, fixtures and fittings, with stock available over and above at valuation.
