Job Title: Trainee Surveyor
Office: Edinburgh Residential
Q1. How long have you worked at DM Hall?
12 years
Q2. Which department are you operating in at DM Hall? What drew you to work in this area?
I am working within the Edinburgh Residential department. I enjoy residential property because of the variety it offers. Having the opportunity to visit and assess many different property styles with no two inspections being the same.
Q3. What did the recruitment process involve and how did you approach your application?
Before becoming a trainee surveyor, I was already working within the department as an assistant to the surveyors in our residential team.
Q4. Tell us about your career to date? University / college / full or part time employment prior to joining? Provide a timeline if possible.
When I first started at DM Hall in 2014, I worked three days a week within our admin team. As my children grew, I was able to increase my working days. In 2024 I was given the opportunity to transition from my admin role and begin training as a surveyor.
Q5. What qualifications do you have now (or are working towards) which you didn’t have when you started in the business?
I am currently working towards my AssocRICS qualifications. As I didn’t study at university, this pathway is the most suited for me. It provides an appropriate and effective route to gain professional recognition within the industry.
Q6. Do you have a mentor in the business or someone who has helped you?
I have worked with the same team for several years and see them all as great mentors. I am learning and becoming more knowledgeable thanks to them.
Q7. What was the most memorable / interesting property or site that you have visited?
The most interesting property I have been to would be a 17th Century “A” Listed seven-bedroom Scottish mansion house on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The historic character, the architectural design and the octagonal stair turrets were very interesting to see.
Q8. What do you like about working at DM Hall?
I enjoy working at DM Hall and being part of a great team. I always feel encouraged to develop and I am well supported. DM Hall has been a great company to work for.
Q9. What are your career aspirations?
I aim to achieve the AssocRICS qualification as a key step in my career. Beyond this, I want to continue building my skills within the surveying profession.
Q10. Any advice you would like to give to future graduates?
We work in a field that always evolves, be willing to embrace and adapt to new changes.
