The 28th annual charity Pro-Am tournament at Douglas Park Golf Club in Bearsden, Glasgow, lived up to its reputation last week as an event par excellence with a sensational day and a new course record.
The sun came out on the perfectly-manicured greens as Tartan Tour professional Chris Currie, Caldwell Golf Club, stole the show by setting a new course record of 61 (eight under par), and shaving two strokes off the previous best.
The severity of the challenge at the event – at which DM Hall Chartered Surveyors, one of Scotland’s leading firms of independent chartered surveyors, were the title sponsors – was illustrated by the fact that only five of the professional players from a strong field of 34 managed to break par.
Celebrity competitors on the fairway included Alastair Forsyth, two-time winner and veteran of the European Tour, currently holding 7th place in the PGA Order of Merit, and reigning champion and Scottish PGA Order of Merit Leader Greg Hutcheon.
Other professionals competing in the tournament included: former Scottish PGA captain Campbell Elliott, of Haggs Castle Golf Club; current PGA Champion Chris Kelly, of Taymouth Castle Estate Golf Club; former European tour player Jonathan Lomas, of Caprington Golf Club; former European Tour Rookie of the Year Scott Henderson, of Kings Links Golf Club and former Scottish Golf Union number 1 Paul O’Hara, sponsored by Ping, Galvin Green.
The popular par 69 course off Milngavie Road, a challenging mix of woodland and parkland, hosted teams consisting of one leading PGA professional from Scotland’s Tartan Tour and three amateurs, on greens which have been meticulously prepared to USGA standards.
The DM Hall sponsored team shot a superb 20 under par total of 118 to win by three shots in the Pro-Am team event, and the day raised several thousand pounds for the Pro-Am charity partner, On Call Africa.
Alan Gordon, principal commercial partner based in the Glasgow North office of DM Hall, said: “As headline sponsor of this year’s Douglas Park Pro-Am, we are delighted that the event attracted 34 sponsored teams, who enjoyed fantastic hospitality in the impressive clubhouse.
“But it’s hats off all round to Chris Currie, who played a truly professional round to smash the course record. I think it may be some time before his outstanding score is equalled or beaten. A marvellous day.”
Douglas Park Golf Club captain Brian Thistle said: “The Pro-Am has become something of an institution at the club and this year’s event was bigger and better than ever. We are very grateful for the generous support from DM Hall.”
