Location/Description

The subjects occupy a prominent corner position on the Southmost side of Gallowgate, at its junction with Burgher Street at Parkhead Cross in the Parkhead area of Glasgow, approximately two miles East of the city centre.

Parkhead Cross is a major road intersection forming the confluence of Gallowgate (A89), Duke Street, Westmuir Street, Tollcross Road and Springfield Road.  Accordingly the subjects benefit from high levels of passing vehicle traffic.

The surrounding area comprises a mix of commercial and residential premises with surrounding buildings mainly of a high density tenement style.

The Forge Shopping Centre is in close proximity as is Celtic Park Football Stadium which is within walking distance, and generates a high level of custom for the business.

The subjects comprise former licensed bar/restaurant premises which occupy the ground floor of a substantial five storey corner building formerly comprising the Glasgow Savings Bank.  The upper floors appear to comprise a dentist and residential flats.

The building is of architectural interest (Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh) with stone detailing to main elevations, a corner turret roof feature and stone arches over ground level window openings.

The main entrance door, which leads in to the entrance vestibule, is on the corner of Gallowgate and Burgher Street.  Leading from the vestibule is a wide feature corridor which includes marble columns and finishes to walls.  Beyond this, the main bar area is contained within the former banking hall.

The bar is attractively presented with a Glasgow theme and much use has been made of the original architectural features and characteristics of the former banking hall.

The servery has been formed from the original banking hall teller counter and has a marble effect worktop.  To the rear of the bar servery and contained within part of the single storey rear extension is a service area partly within the original bank’s strong room.  This area is utilised as a beer cellar, secure wine/spirits store and cleaners cupboard.  The service corridor also provides fire escape access to Burgher Street and facilitates deliveries.

Leading off the main bar area are separate male, female and disabled toilet facilities.

The toilet corridor also leads to the children’s play area, which also has independent access directly from Gallowgate and from the main entrance vestibule.  This incorporates various play equipment to include soft ball play areas, chutes, climbing frame, etc.

Also leading from the bar is the kitchen which is spacious and incorporates separate catering and wash up areas together with walk in dry goods store.  The kitchen is fully fitted and equipped to a comprehensive, modern standard.
